Curtis Canyon Site Detail
When the wind is from the W to NW and it is too strong to fly Beaver or SnowKing this can be a good spot for an excellent ridge soaring session. Considerations: This area is closed to critical wildlife range during the winter and spring. It is a good site if things look too windy for some of the higher flying sites. Wind: Directions: From downtown Jackson Hole head East on Broadway (main street). At the East end of the road turn left onto the National Elk Refuge. Follow this road for 3.5 miles until a 90 degree left hand turn is reached. Follow this to the left. After 1 more mile there will be a clearly marked right hand turn for Curtis Canyon. To the right, half way up the first switch back, you will find the lower LZ for Curtis canyon. This is a good meeting place and practice kiting area, as well as a landing zone for when flying Curtis Canyon. At the end of the second switch back is the main parking lot. There is a knob just to the West of the parking lot that is used for kiting, beginner launches and landing when wanting to be close to your car. To the South of this know is the trail that heads to the standard launch. Drive time: 25 min Hiking time: 8 min 45 seconds. PS: from the knob you can also kite partway up the ascent trail and bench up. If the wind is south this is not recommended. Google place mark: CurtisCanyon.kmz |
